The Illinois House of Representatives failed yesterday to approve a temporary one month budget (HB 4190) by four votes. The State Senate however, before adjourning, passed a one month budget (SB 2040) for critical services. The House cannot take up the Senate bill until they return next Wednesday.
"Local governments such as Peoria County will continue operations regardless of the lack of a balanced budget at the state level," says Peoria County Chairman Andrew A. Rand. "Most essential services that are considered the safety and welfare of our citizens are not affected."
Local governments will continue receive state income, sales and motor fuel tax shares. Parks and museums may be impacted, but not in the near future. Federal programs are typically unaffected.
The Illinois House adjourned July 1 and is set to return on Wednesday, July 8 at 5 p.m. The State Senate will not return to Springfield until noon on July 14.
