Peoria County Board of Health Approves Funding

Dec 16, 2014 (updated on Dec 19, 2014)

Peoria County - At the December 15, 2014 meeting, the Peoria County Board of Health discussed Peoria City/County Health Department program reports and agenda items. A summary of key issues follows:

Approval of Community Health Improvement Project:

The Board of Health approved a proposal to support an initiative with Hult Center for Healthy Living, the Greater Peoria Family YMCA, and Gifts in The Moment to establish a community-based collaboration to improve the health and wellbeing of children and families in Peoria County. The initiative is a 3 year project with a goal to reduce the proportion of adult and childhood obesity in targeted areas. The first year funds of $197,604 will improve access to healthy produce in food deserts, include an evidence-based nutrition curriculum within targeted District 150 schools, and provide an after-school/summer program. The initiative is designed for the programs to work together to provide a comprehensive approach to community health. In addition, evaluation research of the project is under consideration from Bradley University.

Award of Contract for Clear-Win Program:

The Board approved a low bid that met all specifications to Richards Supply Company to provide replacement windows for the Clear-Win Program. Clear-Win has allocated state grant funding to reduce lead paint hazards in wood windows.

Public Health Response to Ebola:

Greg Chance, Administrator, updated the Board on the Peoria City/County Health Department's response to the public and to healthcare systems concerning Ebola. Process and procedures are in place to provide administrative orders for monitoring of travelers arriving in Peoria County from

countries with Ebola. There are currently no cases of Ebola in Peoria and no travelers are being monitored. The process is a proactive role in preparedness efforts for any highly infectious disease that could present in Peoria County.

Agendas and full Minutes of all Board of Health monthly and committee meetings are published on the Peoria City/County Health Department website at www.pcchd.org.
